Fully embracing the complexity of sustainability calls for understanding it at a new level of consciousness. Patterson utilizes the Integral Framework to develop this understanding, and to infuse sustainability throughout an organization. Innovative leaders champion the Integral Framework because it brings clarity to complexity, alignment to fragmentation, and synergy to environmental, cultural, social, and economic development.

Examining a sustainability initiative through the Integral four-quadrant model allows us to identify most—if not all—the major forces that influence the success or failure of that initiative. By utilizing the Integral Framework you get a comprehensive picture of all the dynamics at play that will either make or break an initiative or project.
